Bachelor of Special Education
The Bachelor of Special Education is a professional development program for those who are already qualified educators and who are seeking to pursue further professional studies. The Bachelor in Special Education aims to educate and qualify teachers of the Special Education Resource Centres that have the responsibility to resource teachers in the regular schools of the provinces to provide quality education for all children and for senior staff of all primary and community schools and also those aspiring to such positions who need to be educated and qualified for leadership in providing education for all in inclusive schools.
The program is offered across the country in at least three (3) regional centres and delivered in a flexible learning mode. The program will improve both the quality and number of professional development opportunities available to teachers and other professional educators, assist in their classroom, resourcing and leadership roles, and support their career development.
The Program consists of eight (8) units:
- Two (2) units/modules of general educational studies required in the B.Ed. (Inservice) Primary Teaching, namely the module entitled “The Ethical Educator” adapted and the module, “Inclusive Education”
- Six (6) units /modules of special education studies.
The units or modules may be done in any order.
The titles of the units then are:
Ethical Special Education in the Christian context
Inclusive Education Special education studies… of which six are selected.
- Introduction to Disabilities and Disability Issues
- Learning Difficulties
- Disability Prevention and Early Intervention
- Children with Higher Incidence Disabilities
- Children with Lower Incidence Disabilities
- Educating Deaf & Hearing Impaired Persons*
- Educating Blind & Vision Impaired Persons**
- Educating Gifted & Talented Persons (an option for future development and implementation)
(* A prerequisite for crediting this module on educating deaf persons is to have completed a Certificate in Communication of Deaf Persons or a program in sign language deemed to be equivalent.
** A prerequisite for crediting this module on educating blind persons is to have completed a Certificate in Braille Literacy or a program in Braille reading and writing deemed to be equivalent.)
