Department of Environmental Health

Promote quality Environmental Health Education in line with DWU Core Values through excellence in Learning and Teaching, Research and Community Engagement.

Mission statement
To train competent Environmental Health Professionals for the needs of the nation and in particular for the rural majority and urban disadvantaged in accordance with the PNG National Health Plan 2011-2020 and PNG Vision 2050.

The Environmental Health program began in 1967 at the College of Allied Health Sciences in Madang. In February 2002 the College of Allied Health Sciences amalgamated with the Faculty of Health Sciences at Divine Word University.

The program was developed to address the growing need for better health practices in the rapidly developing and growing urban areas in the country. Environmental Health Officers manage the environmental health activities in the provinces, districts and towns of Papua New Guinea. They are specialists in the health environment field and aim to help the local communities improve environmental health conditions through advising, educating and planning environmental health measures. The program aims to educate a person who will be able to, through health education, motivate communities to accept responsibility for a healthy and clean environment.

The Bachelor of Environmental Health degree program requires four years of full-time study leading to the award of the Bachelor of Environmental Health (BEH). The program is divided into four main areas of study: Basic Sciences, Public Health & Epidemiology, Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, and Environmental Health laws & Management.

The course program is multi-disciplinary for all Environmental Health Professionals in the public and private sectors. Students train to become specialists in various environmental health fields, health promotion & education, occupational health & safety, waste management, food quality control, environment & sustainable development, pollution control, vector control and pest control, water & sanitation and health quarantine.
