Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

This Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program is designed as a five year program to produce doctors with a commitment and clinical competency to serve the population of Papua New Guinea. Through an innovative curriculum, Divine Word University seeks to provide an educational experience that nurtures our students to become both outstanding doctors and medical leaders of the future capable of transforming patient care. Opening of this program is in response to inadequate health service delivery to the rural population challenged by lack of doctors. Eligible for enrollment are predominantly the applicant with successfully completed science foundation or equivalent. This five-year program provides meaningful early patients experience and has 3 stages (sometimes called 1+2+2): year one is foundation of biomedical sciences; years 2 and 3 - transition from sciences to clinical practice, years 4 and 5 – clinical practice. We embraced systems approach which allows for early integration of knowledge including correlation between structure and function as well as underlying molecular causes of diseases. For the last two years the students will have an ample opportunity to have hands-on experience doing supervised clinical practice in rural and urban settings. MBBS program are to prepare graduates, who are competent and confident to provide clinical services, who are accountable for their ethical and professional standards, and are able to lead the team of health professionals in a district.
