Shannon Library


The DWU Libraries supports the Vision of the University to emerge as a national University. The Libraries build collections and provide access to information and services to support teaching, learning, research and creative endeavors.

The Shannon Library is named after a pioneer Sr. Margarita Shannon the founder of teacher education in the diocese of Wewak. she headed the first teacher training center which opened in 1957. In 1976 she went on study leave for a year and returned as a qualified librarian and started a library in Kaindi Teachers College now the Shannon library.
Shannon Library is a special academic library is committed to follow and support the vision and mission of the Divine Word University in which serves the educational and information needs of its , student teachers, lectures, matriculation students, Kaindi Demonstration school and their teachers, religious friends, Callan Unit for disable staff, St. Benedicts community, provincial stakeholders and overseas visitors.

The library has collection of 20 000 resources of charts, audio visual, monographs, research databases and distinguished special collections of Papua New Guinea primary school teachers’ resources (OBE) Outcome Base Education teachers guide and resources. Liberty version IV of Library Management System is in place for easy loan and cataloguing processes. All resources are viewed on an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). Students can have access to scholarly databases with the most comprehensive, specialized and up-to-date information in their fields. The Shannon Library is playing an active role in educating the faculty and students on how to make the best use of these resources.

The library is managed by three staff who work together to ensure all information is acquired by its users. Ask library staff for help.

The Shannon Library offers more than 40 study carrels and 6 large tables for group work and projects with fully furnished and air conditioned research room.
• A secretarial service is provided for typing assignments and other documents.
• Photo copy and printing services are also provided.
