Academic year launched with renewed commitment

Dr David KavanamurDivine Word University officially opened its academic year at the Madang Campus this morning (Friday 8 February, 2013).

Director General of the Office of Higher Education, Professor David Kavanamur launched the academic year with an inspiring address to the DWU community.

Professor Kavanamur applauded DWU for being in the forefront of higher education and development in Papua New Guinea.

He said DWU is a prime example of all that is to a higher education institution. Professor Kavanamur congratulated the University for all that it has achieved in a short time after the former Divine Word Institute was declared by Parliament a University in 1996.

He said all around DWU campus is evidence of achievement and progressive development in a short span of time.

Professor Kavanamur also challenged the students to be innovative and creative at the same time keeping their level of curiosity high.

President of DWU, Fr Jan Czuba in his welcome address highlighted the core values of the university which guide and shape the university to what it is today.

Fr Czuba told the staff and students that they were lucky to be at DWU because of the University’s very strong values and believes that a grounded in ethics based on Christian teachings.

Fr Czuba also announced that all students attending DWU will be undertaking Online Literacy and Numeracy Studies starting this year.

The President made the announcement that all students at the University will be issued a laptop each upon full payment of school fees.

This is to cater for the University’s commitment to have all students from each department to take up  at least two online courses which will be assessed and added to their credit points.

Fr Czuba said this will be a pilot project thus if successful will be introduced to other higher education institutions.

The official program began with an ecumenical mass at the St Joseph Freinademetz Chapel that was followed by the addresses from Fr Czuba and Professor Kavanamur at the SVD Memorial Auditorium.

The official launch concluded a week of registration and orientation of students.

All lectures commence on Monday 11 February, 2013 with 1500 students enrolling at the Madang campus.
