DWU welcomes new Chairman of University Council

Divine Word University (DWU) welcomed an old friend, Archbishop Douglas Young SVD on the 14th of May, 2013.

Archbishop Young, the Archbishop of Mt Hagen Archdiocese was welcomed as the new Chairman of the University Council.   He joins the Council after being appointed to the position by the SVD Provincial Superior and his Council.  He is still serving as archbishop of Mt Hagen.

Archbishop Young replaced outgoing chair, Father Garrett Roche SVD and will serve the Council for three years.

The former DWU staff was treated to a brief but rousing welcome at the Staff Dining Room.

University President, Father Jan Czuba, while officially welcoming Archbishop Young said he had contributed significantly to the university by introducing the Bachelor’s program for the PNG Studies during his term as Head of department.

He said the University Council is looking forward to working with Archbishop Young.

Archbishop Young said he is happy to be back in DWU and looks forward to his new commitment.

“I hope I can bounce ideas from time to time. I am very honoured to be part of the (University) Council,” he said.

After his welcome tea, Archbishop Young spent some days visiting the different sections of DWU and familiarizing himself with the recent developments and plans of the University.

Archbishop Young holds a doctorate in Conflict Transformation from Macquarie University, Australia, and has a dedicated history of service in Papua New Guinea for over 30 years. He is originally from Australia.

 According to the Catholic News online, he had used that to his advantage by conducting research on PNG’s various reconciliation processes.
