DWU Announces 2016 Teaching Excellence Awards

Divine Word University has inaugurated an award system for its lecturers and tutors called the “Teaching Excellence Awards” this year.

The University is therefore delighted to announce the awardees for the 2016 Teaching Excellence Awards.

The winner of the ‘2016 DWU Award for Teaching Excellence’ is Dr John Benjamin of the Department of Health Extension in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This award includes a grant of K5000 to be used for improving learning and teaching.

Dr Benjamin will present a seminar on good teaching in early 2017.

Two other awards were also presented to academics from Madang and Rabaul campuses.

The ‘DWU Madang Campus Award for Good Teaching’ goes to Mr Joseph Ogi of the Department of Business Studies in the Faculty of Business and Informatics.

The ‘DWU Rabaul Campus Award for Good Teaching’ goes to Ms Margaret Kulilan of St Mary’s School of Nursing, Vunapope which is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Rabaul Campus.

To be eligible, academic staff must be nominated by a group of at least three students. For 2016, sixteen (16) academic staff members were nominated, across all Faculties and from our Madang, Port Moresby and Rabaul Campuses. All those who were nominated receive a certificate of recognition.

The aims of the Teaching Excellence Awards are:

  • To celebrate excellence in teaching, demonstrating the importance DWU places on good learning and teaching,
  • To recognise the efforts of highly effective and dedicated teachers, affirming their contribution to DWU,
  • To encourage others to improve their teaching, and
  • To establish a cadre of leaders in teaching to mentor less experienced academics.

Awardees and nominees will receive their certificates on Madang and Rabaul Campuses later this month (Madang and Port Moresby) and at the start of December (Rabaul).
