Radio

Radio plays a vital role in providing news, information and entertainment to even the most remote and inaccessible areas of Papua New Guinea. Newspapers and television reach only a fraction of the population, yet almost all villages have access to a radio. Literacy levels are low and many people rely on radio as their main source of national and international news. Journalists providing the news and current affairs programming for the nation’s radio stations need to be well-trained, competent professionals to ensure that accurate, well-researched and informative news is provided. The Communication Arts Department is training students in the skills they will need to produce high quality programmes.

An Electronic Media Training Facility was set up in 2000 to enable students to be taught program production skills.

Funding was obtained from the European Union to buy minidisk recorders as news gathering equipment and state-of-the-art computerised editing suites to enable editing and production skills to be taught.

Chevron Niugini has presented the department with K30,000 to enable a transmitter to be bought with the aim of setting up a campus and community radio station to broadcast to Madang and surrounding communities.
