Br Michael McManus FMS, Head of Department
An Australian Marist Brother with a background in secondary school teaching. He came to Divine Word University in 1998. He is the head of the Communication Arts Department, lecturing in Communication Skills, Media and Society, as well as Family and Social Issues. He has research interests in domestic and sexual violence, child rights and journalism curriculum. He was part of the team of Divine Word staff, students and graduates who produced the AusAID funded State of the Media Report for PNG in 2007.
Patrick Matbob, Lecturer
Patrick started his journalism career in 1985 and worked for Wantok Niuspepa, The Times of Papua New Guinea and the Post-Courier newspapers as a reporter, music columnist, and a sub-editor. In 1998 he launched and edited PNG’s first monthly newspaper magazine called Papua New Guinea Magazine, which was published and circulated in the Post-Courier. He joined Divine Word University in 2002 and is currently teaching Publishing, Layout & Design and applied research for social science. He has a Masters Degree in Journalism Studies from Cardiff University in Wales. He has researched and published papers on advocacy journalism, the West Papuan issue and the national elections. His current research interests include the impact of the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone project, the Ramu Nickel project and governance issues in Madang. He is a correspondent for the Island Business Magazine and also writes for Post-Courier.
Alphonse Aime, Lecturer
came to Divine Word University in 2001 as a lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, Communication Arts Department. He previously was the General Editor of the Melanesian Institute publications in Goroka where he worked for nine years. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia in 1999. Recently he graduated with a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Divine Word University.
Kewana Wickham, Lecturer
Kewana joined the Department in 2002 as a teaching fellow. She has a Masters in Broadcast Journalism (Radio and Television). She started teaching Broadcast Media in 2003 after taking over the reigns from John Retallick. She has been teaching the subject since then. She took a year off, September 2004 to September 2005, to do her Masters in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Sheffield, England. She has produced a number of Radio programmes, especially to do with health. She has also worked with the National Newspaper in 1997 as the Property supplement reporter. She has also attended numerous workshops on HIV/AIDS, Reporting Children’s Issues and has also laid out and designed the Pacific Islands Training Manual on Crisis Reporting in the Pacific.
Joys Eggins, Senor Tutor
Joys has a bachelor degree in Communication Arts from Divine Word University. She has reported in television programmes, documentaries and news stories while working with Religious Television Association in Pt. Moresby. Her skills have also been used by the European Union when she co-produced two TV programmes for their fisheries project in PNG. Joys was a lead Data Coder and Collector with the Media for Development Initiative research team which produced the State of the Media Report for AusAID in 2006. She has a postgraduate certificate in higher education teaching and learning and is currently part of an editing team working on the second volume of the CA Departmental publication. Joys recently presented a paper at the AMIC conference in Singapore in June 2007.
