Department of Communication Arts (Journalism)

Communication Arts Department: Past Achievements & Future Plans
We, at the Communication Arts Department, share a sense of success as we look back to the late 1990s when the department had only 18 diploma students, one can see the significant growth that has taken place.
Communications Arts is now the second biggest department in the university. It has 93 degree and diploma students and every year accepts up to 30 new candidates. It offers the most comprehensive and well-established journalism training in the country. There is a high employment rate amongst the CA graduates who enjoy a good reputation in the mainstream media and other organizations.
As a well established department, producing journalism graduates, CA now often attracts the interest of prospective supporters and volunteer agencies, some of whom have since provided staff, resources and advice. An example of this support is the UNESCO sponsored electronic training facility. This hopefully will one day lead to the development of a community radio station on campus.
However, while acknowledging these achievements, we are constantly searching for ways to improve our pre program and cater not only for the needs of the media industry but also for the communication needs of a developing nation by providing well trained communication officers for civil society organizations. We would also like to open up to our Asian neighbours and engage with similar institutions. As a first step, we are actively encouraging our students and staff members to contribute to the development of their nation by putting more emphasis on original research and the up to date development of the profession.
Program Structure
The diploma consists of five subject areas: PNG history; literature; social and behavioural sciences; management; and religious/ethical issues. They include, and are supplemented by, practical skill units in mathematics, bookkeeping, social research, and computing.
Students have six week's work experience at the end of the first year to gain experience in finding a job, in practical team work, and in being responsible, professional workers.
Students who successfully complete the diploma may enrol in a further two years of study to complete the degree. Candidates with other tertiary diplomas may be accepted for the degree program.
