History and Purpose
When the present Department was established, it was felt that it was important to have a well-educated body of indigenous people who could assume control of their own destiny within the churches, rather than rely on expatriate missionaries. Therefore, a Diploma in Religious Studies was introduced in 1983 and a Certificate of Christian Education in 1986. Changes were made to these courses and to the titles of the awards. In the year 2000 a Certificate in Religious Studies was awarded for one year of religious studies and a Diploma in Arts (Religious Studies) for two years of studies. Major changes in curriculum were implemented in 2005. The curriculum was expanded to cater for students who were interested in working in welfare and in education and a degree in Bachelor of Arts (Religious Studies, Welfare, Education) was offered upon the completion of four years of study. Further curriculum changes occurred in 2007 and it was decided to change the title of the Department to Social and Religious Studies. The degree offers a liberal arts course that aims at a broad general education which points to a wide range of vocational opportunities. The main program of the Department of Social and Religious Studies is the Bachelor of Arts (Social and Religious Studies). This is a four-year program. Students enrol in the Bachelor program but may choose to exit after the first two years with a Diploma in Arts (Social and Religious Studies).
