Divine Word University

Department of Arts (Papua New Guinea Studies)

Program Requirements

STUDENT INTAKE

The general requirement for enrolment is that students have a Grade 12 certificate with “C” levels in all their units. They may have matriculated from Divine Word University or from Grade 12 programs elsewhere in the country. A third group of applicants may be admitted on the basis of past studies, or of professional experience and continued engagement which is taken to constitute the equivalent of academic studies to the Grade 12 level

Applicants need to fill out the Divine Word University application papers specific to their status before enrolment. These application papers provide a chance for the University to gain satisfactory information on the candidates, and set out the requirements and conditions for enrolment. Once the Admissions Committee has accepted an application, the school leavers proceed by putting Divine Word University as their first choice on the school leavers form. In the central governmental selections process a candidate’s admission is confirmed once the final results become known

ACADEMIC PROGRESS

Satisfactory progress through each unit is determined partly on the basis of formal academic performance - that is, by results achieved on various assessment items (written assignments, tests and examinations) and partly on the basis of work experience reports compiled by students and counter signed by on-the-job supervisors. All History, Literature, Management, Social Science, and Religion units are of equal worth and all stipulate a 60% pass grade

Students face discontinuation from residence privileges and academic scholarships, and are not entitled to graduate if they accumulate failures in two units. Students who register one failure must, from their own resources, repeat the program to obtain a passing grade

ADVANCED STANDING

There is some scope within the program to allow applicants who have completed previous relevant academic study to be given advanced standing. This could include cases where comparable units have been taken via distance education mode. Decisions on awarding advanced standing are determined by Divine Word University’s Vice-President (Academic Affairs) in consultation with the Head of the Department
