Work Experience
Divine Word University's PNG Studies department is dedicated to investigating the development issues of Papua New Guinea. The core aim of the Diploma and Degree programs is to develop a truly humanistic approach to PNG social concerns. Distinct from other generalised Arts programs, PNG Studies focuses on issues relevant to nation-building in PNG. The Right Skills
Graduates are trained for employment in community development, public relations, tourism, and education. They find jobs in community relations and human resource management, in mining and other industries.
Our graduates are effective in situations where a 'hands-on', grassroots approach to the needs of the rural majority is essential. And they have the knowledge, flexibility and adaptability for further on-the-job specialised training.
Program Structure
The diploma consists of five subject areas: PNG history; literature; social and behavioural sciences; management; and religious/ethical issues. They include, and are supplemented by, practical skill units in mathematics, bookkeeping, social research, and computing.
Students have six week's work experience at the end of the first year to gain experience in finding a job, in practical team work, and in being responsible, professional workers.
Students who successfully complete the diploma may enrol in a further two years of study to complete the degree. Candidates with other tertiary diplomas may be accepted for the degree program.
