Background
The Business Information Systems programs are designed to fill an urgent need to provide the workforce of Papua New Guinea with professionals who are competent to assist, and provide leadership in, the development and maintenance of electronic digital technology, particularly as it impacts corporate and service sectors of the national economy
Consultation with the University of Technology (Unitech), Lae resulted in a strategy of cooperation whereby DWU will complement Unitech by focusing on Information Systems rather than Computer Science graduates. It was believed that this cooperative strategy would best serve the people of Papua New Guinea
Commencement
The first intake of diploma students occurred in 2003, while the first intake of degree students occurred in 2005
Description
The programs provides a major within the discipline area commonly known as Information Systems, which studies computer applications in so far as they support the business and service functions of modern society. It is to be distinguished from the discipline of Computer Science which is more concerned with the underlying scientific and mathematical principles of electronic digital technology
The Diploma of Business in Information Systems will be undertaken first. On successful completion of this program and after a period in the workforce, graduates will be eligible to apply to enter the Bachelor of Business in Information Systems
It may be possible to run bridging programs to enable diploma graduates from other disciplines to take the degree program in Information Systems. It may also be possible for Diploma graduates who reach a satisfactory level of achievement to proceed directly to the Degree program
Aims
The program aims to provide students with values, attitudes, knowledge and skills in Information Systems that will enable them to contribute significantly to the understanding and ethical management of the developing Information System's infrastructure of modern PNG, both within the home or small office and within larger organisations.
Objectives
The program is designed to enable graduates to:
- describe, explore and ethically critique modern information systems and the accompanying technology
- develop basic programming skills which can be developed further where necessary in the workforce
- explain and apply the principles of data communication and networking and to design local and wide area networks
- provide leadership and management skills in the implementation and development of information systems in a modern business environment
- use effectively standard office end-user software applications and assist others to do so in a business environment
- maintain, support and troubleshoot PC hardware and standard operating systems in efficient working order.
