The primary objective of the Tourism & Hospitality Management program is to provide locally trained professionals for the industry who can help reduce PNG’s dependence on foreign know-how and money, create employment opportunities and develop the local tourism infrastructure in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive way. Tourism can become a profitable industry in itself and has considerable capacity to improve income generation in other complimentary sectors of PNG’s economy. The program aims to produce graduates for middle and upper management positions in the tourism industry as well as enable them to start small viable tourism businesses themselves.
Education for the Future
Divine Word's Tourism & Hospitality Management program responds to Papua New Guinea's need for top class professionals capable of developing one of its most promising industries.
Training for PNG's Tourism Industry
Students acquire a thorough grounding in theory and practice of different sectors in the tourism and hospitality industry and are provided with the management and communication skills necessary to apply their knowledge in their future profession.
Key areas of study include Tourism, Hospitality, Business/Management, Computing, Ethics and Communication, which is integrated in all areas of study.
Special emphasis is given to tourism issues in PNG. Students are taught to take a responsible and critical approach towards developments in the tourism industry and their impact on community, culture and environment
Practising the Theory
To ensure a strong practical focus for the program, students are required to complete an eight week work experience program before they enter the fourth semester. During the academic year emphasis is put on practical exercises in and outside of the classroom, particularly in Hospitality and Travel & Tour Operations. Field visits and excursions are a regular component of a number of units to convey to the students a realistic picture of and valuable insight into the functioning of the Tourism & Hospitality Industry.
The Right Award
The Diploma program is taught over two years. A Degree program for Diploma graduates with a number of years' work experience in the industry is currently being developed and will be available in 2006.
