Department of Information Systems

This Business Program in Information Systems is designed to fill an urgent emerging need to provide the workforce of Papua New Guinea with professionals who are competent to assist, and provide leadership in, the development and maintenance of electronic digital technology, particularly as it impacts corporate and service sectors of the national economy.

The program will provide a major study within the discipline area commonly known as Information Systems, which studies computer applications in-so-far as they support the business and service functions of modern society. It is to be distinguished from the discipline of Computer Science which is more concerned with the underlying scientific and mathematical principles of electronic digital technology.

The program aims to provide students with values, attitudes, knowledge and skills in Information Systems that will enable them to contribute significantly to the understanding and ethical management of the developing Information System's infrastructure of modern PNG, both within the home or small office and within larger organisations.

Department of Mathematics and Computing Science

The Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing Science program fills an urgent emerging need to provide the workforce of Papua New Guinea  with professionals who are competent to apply mathematical and computing techniques and engage in research in mathematics and computing science. The demand for computer-literate mathematicians continues to grow as technology advances. Whether it is making a mobile phone secure, understanding the behaviour of complex software, or designing a super-fast algorithm, mathematics is the key. Mathematics is also being  used in medicine, for example in the analysis of brain scans; and in anthropology, in the study of social relationships; to name just a couple of examples.

The Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing program aims to cater for the interests of those people who would like to specialise in pure mathematics and its applications to computing science. The computing units emphasize the use of mathematics in several areas of computing, especially in the area of software design and data analysis and data and network security.

Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management

DWU was the first national university to recognize the need of PNG's tourism and hospitality industry for qualified professionals capable of developing one of the country's most promising industries. The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management was established in 1998.

The program aims to provide locally trained professionals for the industry who can help reduce PNG's dependence on foreign resources, create employment opportunities, and develop the local tourism infrastructure in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive way.

Students acquire a thorough knowledge of theoretical processes, and are then introduced to practical skills in the areas of hospitality, travel and tour operations, and tourism. Special emphasis is given to educate responsible and critical professionals who will be capable of meeting PNG's challenges in tourism.

As a result of relationships with tourism industry partners in Madang, a close practical component is maintained in this program.
