Program Requirements
Student Intake
Applicants who are school leavers must have a Grade 12/matriculation Certificate with “B” grade average in their final year examinations, with good communication skills and enjoy working with people in a service-oriented environment. For non-school leavers whose academic qualifications do not meet the above standard, other relevant qualifications or experience in tourism, hospitality and management will be considered on merit. Exceptional achievement in the Diploma Programme and industry experience will be the minimum entry requirements for the Degree Programme (2006).
Academic Progress
A student who fails two or more units is liable for dismissal on the recommendation of the Department and the Faculty Board concerned. If a failed unit is a prerequisite for another unit scheduled later in the program, the student is liable upon the recommendation of the concerned Department to primary completion of the unit before continuing with the program. Special regulations apply to skill units such as computer applications. In order to be awarded the diploma, a student must achieve 144 out of a possible 160 credit points and a further 140 out of a possible 160 credit points in order to complete the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management Program. In this program all units are designated core units except for the units verified by the Department as non-core units. Students, who do not complete the work experience program at the end of their second year of their study will not be able to graduate with a diploma if they wish to exit their program.

Work Experience and Extended Research
A specific requirement of the professional education and training is a eight-week work experience program during the first year of studies which is to be completed part-time during the semester and/or full-time during semester breaks. Students are to complete that in order to graduate with a diploma. Non-school leavers with extensive previous work experience may be exempted by the Head of Department.
During the fourth year the completion of a research project is necessary for successful completion of the degree program.
