This is the second survey of visitors to the DWU Cultural Day in 2011 after it was first conducted in August 2010 by the Tourism and Hospitality Management Department of the Divine Word University (DWU). Events such as the annual DWU Cultural Day adds to what the University does to uphold its aim of being an authentic model for national unity. Such events also serve the useful purposes of allowing students to take pride in their cultural heritage, a day of communal celebration and exchange of ideas and information, meeting of students and their benefactors, and fosters other linkages while having some impact on the local economy.

This Tourism and Hospitality Needs Analysis Report was conducted by the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Divine Word University, Madang.
The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Divine Word University was set up to cater to the needs of one of Papua New Guinea’s most essential and dynamic sectors, Tourism.
PNG is seen as a “rich developing country” because of income received through the exportation of minerals, timber and cash crops. However, with the exception of cash crops such as coffee, cocoa and copra, these resources are limited and their exploitation does not necessarily create ongoing or long term employment.
Therefore, income from these operations does not benefit many Papua New Guineans nor is it sustainable for future generations.
The government encourages the development of local manufacturing and service industries in order to reduce PNG’s dependence on limited natural resources and foreign know-how and money, and in order to create employment, particularly in rural areas.
Tourism is hoped to become one of these profitable and sustainable industries

This pamphlet was produced by the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management of Divine Word University, Madang in cooperation with the WWF Pacific Ecoregions Centre and the Madang Visitors & Cultural Bureau.
The idea behind this pamphlet is to provide information for people who want to get out of the urban centres and put their money directly into local communities.
This, in turn, provides some incentives for communities to preserve their cultural heritage protect wildlife and conserve Papua New Guineas' biological diversity.
Community tourism offers visitors the opportunity to get closer to the local community and experience local life and culture. With the economic benefit being injected directly into the local community; community tourism offers small-scale low impact developments, which develop existing infrastructure and supports sustainable ways of living in the environment.
Madang offers an incredibly diverse range of experiences with nature and local communities. Rural communities offer activities that allow the visitor to access beautiful wilderness areas and to meet local people in ways that package tourism does not.
Conditions for community tourism are basic but the attractions are many. Magnificent tropical lowlands; highland forest rich in fauna, particularly birdlife; beautiful fresh and sea waters and of course the 'peaceful Melanesian cultural experience'.
Rural PNG may be beautiful, but it is also a hard place to live. The small income communities can earn from visitors goes directly to pay for school fees and to buy medicines. By visiting the villages you are directly helping to improve peoples' lives.
