Divine Word University
DWU FACULTY OF EDUCATION
Through the Faculty of Education, DWU is committed to enabling and empowering teachers and professional educators of Papua New Guinea to develop the professional expertise of knowledge, attitudes and skills to provide quality education for all children.
DWU is committed to make provision for “quality education for all”. This commitment arises from the Catholic philosophy concerning the rights and dignity of all children and is also in accord with the Papua New Guinea government's commitment to education.
Divine Word University offers programs related to the education discipline in the present departments of Religious Studies and in the Masters in Educational Leadership program offered in the distance education mode. With the affiliation and/or amalgamation of the Catholic Teachers Colleges, Divine Word University will also present new opportunities in teacher education within PNG and the Pacific area.
In the establishment of an experienced and qualified Education Faculty, DWU maintains an expertise and experience in the field of primary teacher education. DWU draws upon an accumulated experience of many years involvement in the provision of primary teacher education through the established primary teacher colleges at St Benedict's Teachers College (Wewak), Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Teachers College (Kabaleo), and Holy Trinity Teachers College (Mt Hagen). DWU will establish the major services of the Education Faculty at the St Benedict's Campus at Wewak and later in other existing Catholic Teacher Colleges (OLSH Teachers College in Kabaleo, and Holy Trinity Teachers College at Mt Hagen).
Programs are offered in teacher education and in special education at the St Benedict's Campus in Wewak. These programs build upon the present Diploma in Teaching program and will extend to a Bachelor in Education degree. The opportunity is also given to providing teachers in the field to upgrade qualifications of certificates and diplomas to a bachelor in-service degree in education. Through the distance education mode, and through the regional centres where the Catholic Teacher Colleges are situated, a special emphasis is placed on the needs of the rural areas. These programs concentrate on mathematics science, language, social science and spirituality initially.
Through the Faculty of Education at St Benedict's Campus (Wewak), the university is able to offer programs in special education developed by the expertise of Callan Services for Disabled Persons.
Once fully established the Faculty of Education will also consider the needs of a secondary teacher education program, as has been envisioned for a number of years.
Divine Word University offers flexibility in the programs offered by the Faculty of Education. The university is presenting programs in eight centres across PNG to the benefit of in-service teachers and to student teachers. The Faculty of Education is able to utilise existing Church educational facilities and take university programs to the rural areas.
