Bachelor of Disability Studies

Overview

The Bachelor of Disability Studies is a professional development program for those who are already qualified educators, health and social welfare workers who are looking to pursue further professional studies. The Bachelor of Disability Studies (in view of the recent commitment of the national Department of Education and the Teaching Service Commission to mainstream CBR Education) aims to educate and qualify teachers and other professionals of the Inclusive Education Resource Centres that have the responsibility to resource teachers to resource service providers, parents and carers in the community to provide quality developmental opportunity for all children.

Location

Available at the DWU St Benedict’s Wewak, and may be offered in Mt. Hagen, Rabaul and Port Moresby).

Admission

Applicants would normally be expected to hold a teaching certificate or diploma with experience; the Diploma of Physiotherapy or Associate Certificate of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR), or with other qualifications deemed to be equivalent.

Special Admission

Applicants whose educational qualifications do not satisfy the requirements for admission but who have a sound and sufficient basis for application based on previous studies or experience may be granted admission.

Program structure

The program consists of eight units chosen from a wider selection of units. These may be taught during the Christmas and mid year institution vacations, as well as during the school year. Students may complete two units per semester if they are able to avail of the vacation breaks for study purposes. The program will be modular with students completing units in any order.

*A prerequisite for undertaking ED434 on rehabilitating deaf persons is to have completed a Certificate in Communication of Deaf Persons or a program in sign language deemed to be equivalent.

Requisites to complete the award

Achievement of 80 credit points, plus a Certificate in Sign Language or equivalent and a Certificate in Braille Literacy or equivalent
