Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Teaching)
Overview
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) a one-year full-time pre-service program for those who want to become secondary teachers and who have a first degree in a discipline relevant to secondary teaching. This one year postgraduate Diploma includes coursework, gradual introduction to the secondary classroom, and an intensive period of in-school experience. Successful participants will be able to teach at least two subjects in PNG secondary schools. This PGDE (Sec) program is different from the Postgraduate Diploma in Education offered in flexible learning mode as this is a full-time pre-service program for those who want to become secondary teachers.

Admission
Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree, or its equivalent, from a recognised tertiary institution. This degree must be in a discipline allied with secondary school subjects in the PNG curriculum. Applicants must be of sound character as they will be teachers of young Papuan New Guineans. Applicants must be able to undertake the Block Teaching Experience, which may involve a period of time away from the campus.
Program structure
The program is structured between the University semesters and the school academic terms. Hence teaching breaks will not necessarily coincide with university timetables. The program structure includes coursework instruction on the principles and practices of secondary teaching, curriculum theory and practice in PNG, social and economic context of PNG education, understanding the PNG adolescent learner, teaching subjects, motivation and the adolescent, getting to know the secondary school and block teaching experience over a continuous six week period. The Block is preceded by a gradual introduction to the secondary school using local schools.
