History and purpose
The Environmental Health program commenced in 1967 at the College of Allied Health Sciences in Madang after its transfer from the Papuan Medical College in Port Moresby. In February 2002 the College of Allied Health Sciences amalgamated with the Faculty of Health Sciences at Divine Word University.
Environmental Health Officers manage the environmental health activities in the provinces, districts and towns of Papua New Guinea. They are specialists in the health environment field and aim to help the local communities improve environmental health conditions through advising, educating and planning environmental health measures. The program aims to educate a person who will be able to, through health education, motivate communities to accept responsibility for a healthy and clean environment.
Program structure
The Bachelor of Environmental Health degree program requires four years of full-time study. The program is divided into five main areas of study: basic sciences, administrative management and law, communication, community health, and technical studies.
Academic progress
Satisfactory progress through each unit is determined partly on the basis of formal academic performance, that is, by results achieved in various assessment items (written assignments, tests and examinations), and partly on the basis of work experience reports completed by students and supervisors.
Entry requirements
School leavers must have gained a minimum grade of B in English and mathematics and at least one of the sciences (either biology or chemistry) at Grade 12.
