History and purpose

In 1998 DWU became the first university in Papua New Guinea to offer Certificate and Diploma programs in Health Administration designed specifically to the needs of Papua New Guinea’s health sector. The program provides education that combines acknowledged local expertise in business, communication and cultural studies, with international expertise in health services management education. The degree program commenced in 2001.

The Health Management program is designed to graduate managers or supervisors working in administrative or clinical positions in the National Department of Health or at provincial, district, hospital or other facility level. They need knowledge, skills and attitudes, not only to meet the challenges of today, but also to take a central role in designing the future of health care in PNG.

Program Structure

The Bachelor of Health Management degree program requires four years of full-time study. Students enrol in the degree program but may choose to exit after the first two years with a Diploma in Health Management.

Student intake

The program allows for the concurrent intake of two categories of students. Students in the first category are health care practitioners with or without clinical qualifications with several years of experience in day-to-day management or administrative positions. Students in the first category are Grade 12 school leavers.

Academic progress

Satisfactory progress through each program is determined on the basis of formal academic performance – that is, by results achieved from various assessment methods (oral presentations, practical work, written assignments and examinations).

Advanced standing

There is scope within the program to allow applicants who have completed previous, relevant academic study to be given advanced standing. This could include cases where comparable units have been taken via distance education mode. Applicants should consult the Head of the Department for further information.

Entry Requirements

Minimum of ‘C’ in Grade 12 English and mathematics, or health care practitioners with years of work experience in management
