Divine Word University is dedicated to the total development of students. So the Department of Student Services looks beyond study to offer a range of services to broaden the spiritual, social and cultural experience of University. Services are also offered to assist students with personal or health problems.
The University also emphasises on molding the future leaders of the country. Each year the student body elects their own leaders which form the Students Representative Council (SRC). The SRC works in conjunction with the University Administration in the management of the affairs of the students, discipline, and takes charge of events like Cultural Day.
On September 16, 2009, the Rt. Hon Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare GCL, GCMG, CH, CF, K St J inaugurated the new student Administration Building named after him. It holds the offices of the SRC Executives, Director for Student Services, the Deans of Men and Women, and Counsellor. Its staff is involved in planning and coordinating the different services as well as working closely with the Student Representative Council (SRC).
The Deans
There is a Dean and Assistant Dean of female students and a Dean and Assistant Dean of male students. Their role is to be a mentor to the students, to take an interest in the progress of each student and being available to discuss any problems which arise. The Deans also supervise the running of the dorms and the maintenance of good order in accordance with the university's disciplinary roles.
Health Clinic
A full time nurse is a first point of call for students who are sick or injured. Located at the end of the Arnold Janssen Hall, the clinic is open Monday to Friday. If a student needs to go to a doctor or to the hospital, the nurse can follow up with them on the student's behalf. Health related literature is available at the clinic. The health clinic services are free to students.
Sports Coordinator
The Sports and Recreation Officer is responsible for developing sporting and social programs for students as well as the facilities needed for them. The person works closely with the Students Representative Council. Its services is available Monday to Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday when need arises.
Counsellor
The counselling services are offered to all students to assist them in overcoming the obstacles they meet in trying to grow to be mature people. The counsellor is available to help students how to deal with life, and events, how to cope with problems, how to adjust to the situations the person is in. She also assists students to grow, to develop their abilities and to improve their ways of behaving and relating to others. She provides advice to students who are experiencing difficulties in their personal life, relationship or study. The counsellor is involved in the personal development programs on issues such as healthy lifestyle, sexual awareness, drugs and alcohol awareness, and stress management.
Chaplaincy Service
The philosophy of education at DWU is rooted in the DWU Charter, which focuses on the education of the whole person. The university chaplain co-ordinates the spiritual activities on campus through worship, prayer, retreats and study groups. Each year representatives from the students, staff, community and other faiths are elected to form the Pastoral Team. In collaboration with the Department of Student Services, the Pastoral Team coordinates activities that offer unique non-academic experiences to staff and students to meet God in nature, in other spiritual activities like group prayers, bible sharing, community service, and other activities to enable the students to develop a philosophy of life based on Christian values. Individual spiritual guidance and counselling are also offered on request.
Other Activities
Throughout the year, social, sporting and cultural events are organised in collaboration with the Students' Representative Council. An annual highlight is Cultural Day, in August, in which students celebrate their own culture and share aspects of their regional cultures with the other students and the community.
There is a wide range of provincial and sports clubs and committees on campus in which students can pursue their intellectual, cultural and social interests.
