Entry requirement: :“B” in English, Mathematics and Commerce or Business Studies in year 12 examinations.

Year One Semester One
BS114 Accounting Fundamentals 1                             8cp
This unit is about the nature and purpose of accounting as well as the methods and technical skills necessary to manage basic accounting procedures. The unit will acquaint the students with the methods and techniques of recording, classifying, summarising and presenting financial information on the computer.

BS115 Management Principles                                     8cp
This unit serves as an introduction to the principle and practices of management and the role of managers. The unit will mainly evolve around the basic functions of managers, specifically planning, organising, leading and controlling. Apart from providing the students with the beginning level of understanding management principles, PNG case studies will analysed using various and appropriate strategies and techniques base on relevant principles and theories.

BS116 Business Communication                                  8cp
The unit comprises of two components namely written and oral communications. The written component aims to provide the students with the knowledge and skills to write clear, concise, relevant and effective business correspondence, reports and memorandums. The oral components are comprised of composing a draft for an interview, taking dictation, using the telephone and present ting reports.

IS117 End-User Computing & Word Processing     8cp
This unit provides an introduction to the PC including its structure and place in the home or small office environment. It seeks to develop basic computer literacy and typing skills. Included is an understanding and facility with the use of a graphical user interface. Students are also provided with skills to use an Office suite of software, email, Internet and an intranet. Word Processing is an essential skill in the home and the small office and for student assignment writing. Students are given a comprehensive introduction to the basics of text formatting using word processing software.

RS234 Christian Ethics                                                   8cp
Ethics is a systematic, critical study concerned with the evaluation of human conduct to help male decisions about the future. It is concerned about what is right, fair, just or good; about what we ought to do, not just what is the case or what is most acceptable or expedient. Christian ethics is the critical evaluation of human conduct from a Christian perspective. In this course, students will explore the understanding, sources and importance of ethics in everybody’s personal and professional life.

Year One Semester Two
BS117 Accounting Fundamentals 2                             8cp
This unit is a continuation of Accounting Fundamentals 1. The unit provides additional understanding of accounting concepts especially in the treatment of adjusting entries, closing entries and reversing entries. The knowledge and technical (including computer) skills necessary to report and interpret financial information honestly, clearly and accurately are developed. Students engage with mathematical calculations and techniques for recording, classifying, summarising, presenting and interpreting financial information. An overview on accounting for partnership and companies usher the students into other fields of accounting like company law, finance and financial management.

BS118 Principles of Economics                                    8cp
This unit introduces the students to concepts, principles and theories that explains the behaviour of consumer and producers of goods and services, owners of economic resources in a free enterprise economy such as PNG. Furthermore the unit will teach the students how to utilise economic theories to analyse problems faced by individuals, organisations and the economy as a whole. Choice and scarcity of economic resources will be emphasised in decision - making.

BS119 Mathematics of Finance                                    8cp
The unit deals with basic financial models used in business and industry. The unit aims to develop the students to have a logical mathematical argument and understanding of the usefulness of the various types of financial models used in decision making such as time value of money, computations of interest rates for single payment and annuity cash flow, use of percentage variations on numeric calculations, calculate cash discounts, mark-ups and mark downs, sinking fund amortization schedule, promissory notes and depreciation. It also explores the use of computer software to solve modeling problems.

This unit provides students the knowledge and understanding of the legal requirements for the formation and operation of unincorporated organisations, incorporated organisations, savings and loan associations and associations in PNG

RS244 Social & Ethical Issues                                      8cp
In this unit, students explore a range of social and ethical issues in Papua New Guinea today. This study includes an in-depth examination of the various contemporary social and ethical issues like abortion, domestic violence, rape, settlements and evictions, etc. Thus, by eliciting Christian insights into the social and ethical questions of the day, the unit will better equip students to contribute to the common good in whatever profession they choose.

Year Two Semester One
BS211 Financial Accounting 1                                      8cp
This unit provides students the theoretical framework which constitutes a set of inter-related concepts which defines the nature of, subject, purpose and broad contents of financial reporting. Financial accounting focuses on the development and communication of financial information for external users primarily in the form of general-purpose financial statements. These statements include a balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flow and usually a statement of changes in retained earnings or in owner’s equity. The use of computer software in financial accounting is also discussed.

BS212 Principles of Marketing                                    8cp
The unit introduces the students to the imperatives of marketing, not only as an organizational function but also as the philosophy guiding modern businesses. Students engage with basic marketing principles and theories and apply the concepts in class within the context of marketing decision-making and problem solving activities of large companies, small businesses and non-profit organizations. Marketing is defined and company orientations towards the market place are presented. Students further examine the marketing process, analysis of marketing opportunities and threats, target marketing, with emphasis on the development of a company’s marketing mix.

BS213 Quantitative Methods in Business 1                8cp
The unit familiarizes students with mathematical and computational concepts and techniques widely used in accountancy, economics, finance, marketing and management. The unit will enable the students to develop the skill of using mathematical functions, mathematics of finance, matrix algebra, linear programming and applied calculus to analyse and solve business problems. This unit will also expose the students to computer software for solving problems.

BS214 Banking & Finance                                             8cp
This unit introduces the students to the underlying concepts, principles and theories of money, credit, banking and other financial institutions. The unit will focus on monetary theories, policies and programs of the Bank of Papua New Guinea, economic events such as inflation and globalisations and their influence on the purchasing power of the kina locally and in the international market as well as the lending and investment decisions of financial institution and other forms of businesses operating in PNG.

IS113 Spread Sheet Management (Service Unit)       8cp
Electronic spreadsheets now replace hand-written financial record keeping and calculating in the small or home office environment. As well the typical ‘what-if’ analysis feature of spreadsheets facilitates decision-making. Skills in spreadsheets management are, therefore, essential for those entering the business world. With a commonly used software application this skills-based unit students are introduced to the fundamental principles and practical skills required to produce accurate calculations in worksheets with a professional appearance.

Year Two Semester Two
BS215 Financial Accounting 2                                      8cp
This unit is a continuation of Financial Accounting 1. The unit begins with an overview of general-purpose external financial statements and then considers each of at the major kinds of assets, liabilities and stockholder’s equity, with special attention to the effect of their measurement on net income and their presentation in the financial statements. The effects of inflation are also discussed and illustrated.

BS216 Cost Accounting 1                                               8cp
The unit introduces students to the various cost concepts and explores the different cost accumulation procedures. Job order and process costing are explored and applied on business concerns, on service organisations such as health care organizations and hotel services. The first part of the unit covers the costs, its concepts and objectives, its vital role in management planning, organising and control. The second part probes in detail the cost elements and its accumulation under job order costing and inventory valuation.

BS217 Taxation 1                                                             8cp
The unit is introduces the students to Income Tax laws and regulations that apply to Papua New Guinea. The unit also prepares the students for professional accounting examinations. The unit will focus on introduction to income tax laws for individuals, resident and non-resident, companies and other business and allowable deductions to businesses.

BS218 Methods of Research                                          8cp
Research can be described as a systematic and organised effort to investigate a specific problem that needs a solution. The aim of this unit is to provide the students with the theories of qualitative and quantitative research and research methodology. Furthermore the students will be taught how to develop and organise a systematic, database, critical and scientific inquiry or investigation to a specific business problem. The unit culminates with a student presentation of a research proposal.

IS115 Database Management (Service Unit)              8cp
Database systems are foundational examples of Information Systems. They are required in all office environments where data on such items as staff, clients and stock need to be recorded and retrieved. This unit introduces database management with a commonly used relational database management system where data is organised in a logical and orderly way using fields and records in creating tables. Tables are organised and linked and then queried to search and manipulate records. There is focus also on activities with business applications such as personnel, inventory, and financial record management.

Year Three Semester One
BS312 Financial Management                                      10cp
This unit gives students an operational knowledge of finance through theory and application, including computer application. The concepts, principles and theories will provide the students the knowledge, analytical and evaluative skills in making decisions pertaining to the allocation, acquisition and management of funds whether for working or long -term investment needs of businesses operating in PNG.

BS313 Quantitative Methods in Business 2                10cp
Statistics is a science concerned with decision making in the face of uncertainty. The aim of the unit is to introduce statistical methods with application to business and management. It covers both descriptive statistics and statistical inference. The unit will provide the students the necessary skills to analyse, interpret and evaluate numerical information pertaining to a business management problem faced by a firm and to incorporate statistical approaches to deal with variability and chance in decision-making. Computer skills will also be emphasized.

BS314 Taxation 2                                                             10cp
This unit is a continuation of Taxation 1. Students are trained further to assist and represent clients before government agencies in relation to tax matters. The unit will focus on tax laws of PNG pertaining allowable deductions to business such as tax treatment of business expenses, depreciation, specific tax incentives for industry, taxation for non residents and overseas income, tax administration taxation of resource projects.

BS320 Organisational Behaviour                                10cp
This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills for understanding and effectively managing individuals and groups in organizations. The unit explores various types of theories to explain and predict individual and group behaviour in the work place.

Year Three Semester Two
BS317 Human Resource Management                       10cp
The unit introduces students to the functions and practice of Human Resource Management (HRM) in organisations seeking to deliver quality service and achieve performance improvement. The unit will explore the relevance and adaptation of HRM concepts in the context of work and culture in Papua New Guinea companies.

BS318 Marketing Management                                    10cp
Marketing management is the integration of marketing concepts into a managerial approach. The aim of this unit is to train students to plan and develop products or services based on consumer demand; build appropriate marketing plan or a marketing mix that will fulfil the set of goals of a business; formulate sound marketing polices and programs suited to a PNG market as well as its implementation and control.

BS321 Public Administration                                        10cp
Managers in the public and not-for-profit organisations face many of the same problems that challenge companies in the for-profit sector. The unit introduces to the students the history of public administration in PNG, organisation theories and models adopted by governments of different countries, the three branches of a government and their administrative powers, the ethical, economic and political implications of government fiscal, monetary and trade policy.

BS322 Total Quality Management & Accountability              10cp
This unit examines the background of quality management, the implication of its introduction and the potential benefits available. The unit discusses what quality, quality assurance and quality management mean. Emphasis is given on quality standards and factors affecting quality outcomes.

Year Four Semester One
BS415 Company Law 1                                                  10cp
The unit introduces the student to the historical background and development of Company Law and its application under the PNG setting. The unit will provide the student with a sound knowledge of the basic principles and laws governing formation, organisation, constitution and management of companies. PNG Companies Act of 1997 will be the main reference of the unit. Students are further introduced to legal terminologies and technical applications involving dubious and illegal actions.

BS417 Project Feasibility & Development of Enterprise        10cp
This unit introduces students to the nature of business ownership specifically small business in PNG and the factors needed to consider before deciding to become an entrepreneur. Furthermore the unit will train the students how to prepare and write a business plan and a feasibility study whether for entrepreneurship or for a clientele.

BS422 Managing Change in Organizations              10cp
Change is situational and transition is a psychological process people undergo to come to new terms with the new situation. The aim of this unit is to provide the students a framework that will integrate the management of technological and marketing innovations. Furthermore, the unit will provide the students the knowledge to understand the skills to avail innovations faced by an organization operating in a PNG business environment.

BS423 Production/Operations Management            10cp
The unit introduces students to the concept of a production system and traces the evolution of production and operations management from a focus on output and efficiency to a focus on quality, customer satisfaction and value and their impact to cost and profitability. The unit deals specifically with designing and operation of an effective production system, forecasting, techniques in management science, planning to meet high level financial and marketing objectives, performance measurement in operations, facilities layout and location planning and analysis.

Year Four Semester Two
BS419 Business Information Management               10cp
This unit underscores the methodological importance of accurate, relevant, timely and complete data for effective and ‘evidence-based’ decision making for business and industry. The unit will train the students how to support decisions with the right information at the right time and using technology to collect, process and disseminate information to improve delivery of products and services to customers.

BS420 Company Law 2                                                  10cp
This unit enables students to understand company law applies both in times of success and in times of difficulty. Students consider different changes and problems a company might encounter and what the law provides as remedial actions to protect its existence, recovery and survival. Students analyse various methods such as takeover, reorganisation, reconstruction and amalgamation. Students consider various schemes of compromise and moratorium for company recovery. Should these measures fail, students consider remedies such as: receivership, official management, and eventual winding up. Included are topics on liquidation, dissolution and being struck off the register.

BS424 International Management                               10cp
The unit aims to provide students with an accessible, application oriented approach to international management, focusing on key challenges, including how to lead, motivate and communicate with people across different countries and cultures. The students are provided with global perspectives on the process of hiring, training and developing employees, as well as strategic decision making in relation to foreign markets that PNG organizations are dealing with.

BS425 Strategic Management                                       10cp
This unit provides the students with a set of frameworks, tools and concepts to build the capability of strategic thinking. The topics of this unit are drawn from the theoretical and empirical observations of microeconomics and organizational theories. Students gain insights to the strategic development by successful organizations to meet a changing environment.
