Media, Information and Development in Papua New Guinea

Edited by Evangelia Papoutsaki and Dick Rooney

mediaIn Papua New Guinea, as in other South Pacific Islands, there has been a noticeable lack of research into media and little information about how people use the media. Lack of proper research in this field has further contributed to a general perception that communication is not a priority for the country's development.

This book touches on a wide number of media issues in PNG, such as ethics, freedom of expression, ownership, journalism education, community media, culture and identity and government and media. These issues were discussed from a communication and development perspective.

This publication is the collective effort of staff, degree students and associates of the Communication Arts Department at DWU.

Surgery: For primary health care workers in Papua New Guinea

FIRST EDITION

By Dr Jerzy Kuzma

The development of evidence-based medicine has brought about numerous changes in surgical practice, which call for substantial review of existing manuals in PNG.

Over 80% of the population lives in rural and remote areas with access only Primary Health Care.

SurgeryThe objective of this book is twofold; (i) to up-date the surgical knowledge and provide a reference guide for Health Extension Officers (HEO), nurses, and other health workers providing surgical services in the rural areas, (ii) provide a modern, updated, yet simplified surgical guide. The material is based on the surgical experiences of the author, other surgeons and Health Extension Officers in PNG.

This book is problem-based oriented with appropriate practical advice on the management of the most common surgical problems experiences by primary health workers. It is simplified and adapted to the rural setting where surgical procedures are done by a HEO, nurse or Community Health Worker (CHW). Although the book contains descriptions and illustrations on basic procedures, it cannot substitute for practical "hands on" experience.

Trauma remains one of the leading causes of death and disability in the first four decades of life and thus it has significant impact on public health. It is hope that this will improve the care of trauma patients. The book includes the latest advances in early trauma and management.

A system of Triage is described to indicate patients requiring referral for specialised care in provincial hospitals. The main focus is on curative surgical services but appropriate disease prevention and health promotion is emphasized.

The purpose of the book is to make surgical skills relevant to the rural and remote areas. Hopefully it will greatly assist those managing surgical problems in PNG.

Enga Jubili

Fr. A. Krol, SVD
Fr. F. Mihalic, SVD

Enga_JubiliEnga Jubili is a photographic celebration of fifty years' Catholic missionary work among the people of the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea.

Since Fathers Bus and Ross, SVD, first entered the 'restricted' area in October 1947, there has been an amazing growth in church membership, in health and educational services so that, fifty years later, there were 60,000 Catholics, twenty schools and several health, pastoral and vocational centres.

Enga Jubili unfolds a drama with a cast of courageous and dedicated men and women from every continent, from Papua New Guinea itself, but starring the Enga people themselves, in their enthusiastic acceptance of the gospel and their passion for sharing it. Those who already know the characters in the story will enjoy their company again. Those who do not know them personally will enjoy meeting them in these pages.

Readings in PNG Mission History

Fr. Frank Mihalic, SVD

Readings_in_PNGReadings in PNG Mission History is a comprehensive study of the Catholic Church in postwar PNG.

The fruit of more than 10 years' research and writing, Readings in PNG Mission History is a breathtaking panoramic view of half a century of mission history, from the re-establishment of the Catholic Church in the war-torn coastal dioceses, to the missionaries' outreach into the Highlands - where they were among the first outsiders to make contact with the more isolated communities.

Although a serious academic inquiry, the author never loses sight of the very human individuals who have made postwar history. The book includes personal, often touching recollections of those who have dedicated their lives to PNG mission work. First-hand accounts and original research from primary sources gather together for the first time the tragedies and the achievements, the hard toil and the gripping adventures of the missionary Fathers, Brothers and Sisters. Many of the characters, such as 'Flying Bishop' Leo Arkfeld, are sadly no longer with us and Readings serves as a testament of their contribution to PNG's social, spiritual and economic development.

The focus of Fr Frank's research is the work of the Society of the Divine Word and the Holy Spirit Sisters, but Readings necessarily ranges much wider than this. The book compiles the histories of those religious congregations which have shared the work and the harvest of missionary activity. Readings explores the contributions of the many congregations active in PNG: the Marianhill, Marist Brothers, Sacred Heart Brothers, Christian Brothers, Michaelites, Spiritans, and Passionists; the Mercy, Rosary, Notre Dame and Sacred Heart Sisters, among others.

Separate chapters catalogue the work of the lay missionary services and the movement of grassroots Catholicism, the Charismatics, Antiochs and Young Christians.

Readings also includes chapters on those areas where the Catholic missionary services have been a moving force in the country's development: health, education, transport and mass communications.

Readings in PNG Mission History is fully indexed and annotated for the serious scholar of South Pacific history.

Fr Frank Mihalic is well known to all in PNG as the author of the 'Jacaranda Dictionary of Melanesian Pidgin'. He has written more than 30 books, as well as over 1300 columns in the Wantok newspaper that he helped establish in 1970.

Culture and Progress: The Melanesian Philosophy of Land and Development in Papua New Guinea

Edited by Nancy Sullivan

CultureLand issues cut to the heart of national and individual identity in Papua New Guinea. "Land is our physical life," wrote John Dove, Theodore Miriung and Mel Togolo, in 1974. "Land is our social life; it is marriage; it is status; it is security; it is politics; in fact, it is our only world..."

Nearly 30 years later, those words still ring true - and the nation is still struggling to fit its growing development needs into the complex web of the people's connections to, and relationships with, the land.

Featuring a selection of papers delivered at a symposium on land and development held at Divine Word University, Madang, in June 2001, this book aims to represent the complexity of land matters in PNG - and to suggest ways in which customary approaches to land tenure might accommodate development, and help this young nation, built on age-old traditions, move forward into the 21st century.

"No reader could fail to be impressed by the wealth of material and by the wide range of views carefully put forward by the various contributors to this publication" - Dr Hartmut Holzknecht

Two Seasons

a novel by Bernard Narokobi

2seasonsAs the dry season turns to wet, a young boy falls prey to a sickness from which only the masalai can save him. The healing process will see Kandy begin the journey that turns him from a boy into a man.

Two Seasons weaves the story of Kandy's recovery from illness into a portrait of village life that is rich in detail and atmosphere. Traditions and beliefs are central to the characters' lives, and as the story unfolds we see how the past and the present, the spiritual and the physical life, co-exist in harmony.

In this short novel about a young boy's coming of age, Bernard Narokobi has written a lyrical memoir of village life that is destined to become a classic of PNG literature. "Well-informed, eloquent and perceptive ... Bernard Narokobi [has written] a fine-grained and sensitive evocation in fiction of his own society" - The Independent
