Abstract

This study investigated the level of knowledge, the prevalence of risky behaviour and the attitudes connected with HIV/AIDS among the youth in Madang province. Field research was conducted among students at one of the tertiary education campuses in Madang (n=30) and youth in one of villages in Bogia District (n=30). A questionnaire was designed for interview and was collected in May, 2003. The results showed that the students’ group presented a higher level of knowledge about the nature of AIDS in comparison with the villagers. A recommendation is made that further surveys are needed to study the knowledge and beliefs connected with AIDS in order to guide education policy in a more effective way.
