Abstract

The three authors express their central concern as being the issue of whether Christians in PNG are living a schizophrenic existence, ‘hopping back and forth between Christian and traditional cosmologies’. This is an important concern, dealing with the questions of personal authenticity and the integrity of belief systems. At the same time, even though this issue is frequently met with in theological circles, it is really not so difficult to live simultaneously out of two belief systems. Anyone who uses body language to guide a bowling ball along its way, or anyone who enters a hot room and turns the air-conditioning system to ‘Full Cold’ when only ‘Moderate’ is desired—such people are living out of contradictory belief systems without any trouble. It is a happy result that the authors finally land on the side of orthopraxis: ‘Creed follows practice, faith follows prayer’.
