HIV and AIDS awareness programs in remote areas of PNG: an evaluation of VSO Tokaut AIDS impact in the third year of activity
Catherine Levy
Abstract
The Tokaut AIDS Project funded by the Big Lottery Fund (UK) aims to improve the quality of life in two remote, rural target areas by lessening the impact of HIV&AIDS, though developing and supporting community-level responses to the problem, as well as supporting national-level structures. The Awareness Community Theatre (ACT) program is focused in the two districts of Raikos (Madang Province) and Jimi Valley (Western Highlands Province). The project utilizes Community Theatre, training and support at the community and school level to increase awareness of HIV&AIDS, and to promote positive attitude and behaviour change. After a baseline research in 2005, and a first evaluation in 2006, this article features the second evaluation carried out in June 2007.
