Divine Word University successfully hosted the opening ceremony of the 8th Pacific Islands Health Ministers meeting at its main campus in Madang last Tuesday 7th of July, 2009.
President of DWU, Fr Jan Czuba received the health ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister of PNG, Sir Puka Temu and other high profile delegates into the campus for the ceremony that was held at the university’s Sir Peter Barter Auditorium.
Staff and students of DWU ensured the dignitaries were well looked after during their brief (about two hours) presence at the picturesque campus.
The university was privileged to be given the honour to host the opening ceremony of such a high profile regional meeting.
Madang governor, Sir Arnold Amet was also on hand to welcome the delegates to the university.
The opening ceremony of the three-day meet began just after 8 am and involved several speakers delivering speeches to mark the opening of the gathering.
Sir Puka delivered the opening address on behalf of Prime Minister Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare who could not attend due to prior commitments.
Other speakers included World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for the Western Pacific, Dr Shin Young-soo, and Mr William Parr, Director of South Pacific Commission’s Social Resources Division.
After the opening ceremony concluded just after 9 am, the delegates were transported back to Madang Resort Hotel where proceedings for the first day of the meeting began.
The same evening saw a welcome gala dinner hosted by the PNG Minister for Health, Sasa Zibe at the Madang Resort.
The three day meeting concludes on Thursday 9th of July, 2009.
