DWU bans betelnut on campus
Divine Word University has followed the lead by the National Capital District governor Powes Parkop and banned betelnut chewing at its premises in Madang.
The university through its weekly Cabinet meeting in March gave the students’ rugby league team, DWU Diwai, the authority to raise awareness of the dangers of betelnut chewing and keeping the campus clean.
In a notice to the DWU community, the University administration reasoned that “betelnut chewing poses a health hazard and it makes the campus unclean.”
The student group has been given the right to report any violations to university authorities.
“Anyone found chewing betelnut and spitting them within the university premises will have to face the consequences,” the notice reads.
