National and Supreme Court judge, Justice Regina Sagu has reminded outgoing students of Divine Word University to be respectful to others if they want to succeed in life.
Justice Sagu was speaking on behalf of parents at the 2nd annual “Missioning Ceremony” for final year students of the University in Madang on Friday 8th October, 2010.
“If you want to be successful you have to respect others,” Justice Sagu said and urged the students to possess correct attitudes.
She reminded the students to learn to appreciate one another and other people they interact with and be prepared to “coexist and cooperate”.
Justice Sagu also urged the students to be with good company throughout their lives as “bad company corrupts good character”.
Justice Sagu was at the ceremony as a parent where her daughter Melissa Kembol is completing her degree in PNG Studies (Arts).
Melissa is the vice president (female) for the Student Representative Council (SRC) and also received a leadership award from the University for her efforts in the student council.
Justice Sagu said parents were proud to have chosen DWU for their children as it was molding them with the correct ethical values grounded in Christian teaching.
The Judge praised DWU for providing a holistic education where students were being mentored and groomed academically, socially, physically and spiritually.
“We parents are so fortunate to have our children studying here (at DWU).
She commended the leadership of DWU president Fr Jan Czuba that has made the University a vibrant higher learning institution in the country, 14 years after the Government granted university status.
The Missioning Ceremony which started last year is organized by DWU to thank the students and commission them to go out to the world and make a difference. This year’s event had parents and guardians of the 277 final year degree students traveling in from all over the country. DWU took the extraordinary step to book hotel and guesthouse accommodation for all the parents and guardians and provided them meals from the University catering service during their stay in Madang.
