Church Role in Education praised

31/03/2011

Divine Word University has hosted the National Catholic Education Convention this week starting on Monday 28th March, 2011.
The five day convention was organized by DWU’s Faculty of Education that attracted Catholic Education secretaries and Religious and teaching laities within the Catholic Church.
Other Christian Churches such as Seventh Day Adventist were also represented.
The hosting of the convention was part of DWU’s leading role as an education institution in the country where it continues to maintain its responsibility in education through the training of teachers.
DWU President Fr. Jan Czuba said the University always raised questions on the role of Church schools and how these institutions would keep their purposes and values in the face of new technological age.
“This is the challenge for the Faculty of Education at DWU to assist Church-run schools to form intellectually and spiritually teachers to take this task,” he said.
Fr. Czuba stressed that the center of a Church-run school is always the Church's faith and values.
“DWU believes that the need for Christian schools is more critical now than in the past. The Faculty of Education sees that the role of Christian education is to blend the best of both worlds: technological progress used wisely by young people with a deep sense of their own spirituality, culture and concern for others.”
Meanwhile acting Secretary for Education, Dr. Joseph Pagelio acknowledged the Church’s contribution to education in the country. He said the Church was responsible for setting up and administering 50% of schools particularly in the basic education sector.

“If it weren’t for the support of the Churches, and the Catholic Church in particular, many parts of Papua New Guinea will not have access to basic schooling,” said Dr. Pagelio.
