Uni marks independence with PNG Week

Students of Divine Word University (DWU), Madang campus celebrated the recent 36th Independence anniversary differently from the past.

The students marked the national anniversary with the launching of the “PNG Week” on Monday 12 of September in a lead up to the actual anniversary day that fell on the 16th of September.
PNG Week was officially launched with a prayer by a DWU student member of Tertiary Students Christian Fellowship, the national anthem and pledge.
The PNG Week began with PNG movies shown from 3pm 8 pm at the SVD Memorial Auditorium.
“We have shown movies like Tukana, Tinpis Run and Snowy Mountains”, said Lorraine Basse a member of the PNG Week Committee.
She said, on evening of Tuesday 13th September the “PNG Trivia” night was staged where items were presented by staff and students. The Trivia night involved quiz contest on PNG facts where groups had to answer.
The winning team for that night was the Arts Leftovers who won two jumbo pizzas and four bottles of soft drinks.
Basse said Wednesday 14th September was a free day with an evening mass the university chapel and on the Thursday 15th September, a “PNG Music Mini Concert” started at 6.30 am and ended at 9 pm.
The big day event was on Friday 16th September the programs culminated with a procession of students in provincial groups under the provincial flags to the university administration carpark for the flag raising, reciting of the national pledge, prayers and independence speech.
