Disciplined thought and action must be the character and hallmark of Divine Word University (DWU).
President of the DWU, Fr Jan Czuba offered this challenge to students and staff when he opened the academic year for the University at the Madang campus last Friday.

“We need to become an academic community which can engage in disciplined thought and take disciplined action – operating with freedom within a framework of responsibilities,” Fr Czuba said.
“This is the cornerstone of a culture that creates great universities,” he emphasized.

Fr Czuba said in a culture of discipline, people do not have jobs and students do not have duties but they all have responsibilities.
“A culture of discipline is not a principle of business but is a principle of greatness,” he added.

Fr Czuba pointed out that to help ensure discipline, more emphasise has been placed on Pastoral Care, which he added involves the entire university community.
The president then told the students and staff that the present good reputation of DWU was “earned and deserved” and they must work to uphold it.
“This University’s reputation is deserved and well earned.
“We want to uphold that and it falls to all of us to be a part of that process,” Fr Czuba said.

He praised staff for their dedication of service and invited students to appreciate their studentship at DWU and be good ambassadors of their families and communities.
Fr Czuba also announced various developments and projects earmarked for 2011 at the University.
