DWU promotes a safe environment and provides student pastoral care

Sep 01, 2011

The Post Courier daily newspaper published a report titled “DWU students boycott classes” on its Wednesday 30 August, 2011 edition.

Below, Br Andrew Simpson Vice President Student Academic and Administrative Services of Divine Word University (DWU), clarifies the situation to the newspaper as the reporter did not contact the university:

“It is acknowledged that DWU students boycotted classes on Tuesday 30 August, as reported in your article in the Post Courier.  However it needs to be commented that the reporting of the boycott tended to be over-sensationalised by your reporter.

Students did have a genuine concern over security issues, and these have been genuinely faced by the DWU Administration.  In recent times there has been an increase in lawlessness around Madang, and particularly near the university.  DWU does promote a safe environment and provides significant student pastoral care.

There is also tension near the university as the relocation of some residents in the Gov Stoa Settlement is imminent.  Students have been requested not to enter the settlement as they can become targets by a minority group within the settlement.  A dispute between students from another institution and the settlement people, led to violent attacks near the DWU gates on the weekend.

At DWU we communicate closely with students over issues of concern. In this issue of security a small group of students did not follow normal procedures and prevented other students from participating in classes.  This is not acceptable behaviour at DWU as all students have the right to commit themselves to their studies without fear from others.

DWU also maintains a consistent policy of zero tolerance to alcohol.  The policy is applied consistently and generally DWU enjoys a peaceful community atmosphere.  Students have returned to classes and are co-operating with the SRC and the DWU Administration.”
