More females enroll at DWU

01/02/2011

Divine Word University is expected to enroll more female students in its fulltime undergraduate programs than male students at the main campus in Madang this year (2011).

DWU vice president academic, Br Andrew Simpson announced recently that out of the 1315 students expected to be enrolled, 728 would be female while their male counterparts would account for 587 places.

The increased number of study places offered to female students is in line with the university’s charter and the priority it gives to help address gender inequality that persists in a traditionally male-dominated country.
Br Simpson said overall student numbers will largely remain the same except for a modest increase of about 45.

He said this small increase was due to the former three-year Physiotherapy Diploma Program adding another year to make it a four-year degree and the pioneer Bachelor in Mathematics and Computing Science moving into third year and taking its third first year class.

Br Simpson also announced that fees for next will remain the same as last year (2010).
This will mean that fulltime students in Year 1 and Year 2 will pay K5915.00 and Year 3 and Year students will pay K7590.00.

Br Simpson said the new academic year will also see the continuing supply of laptop computers to year Two and Year Three students, an Intensive Language Program for non-English speakers and establishment of a Masters Degree in Public Health.

He said other activities would include the renewal of affiliations of Lutheran School of Nursing Madang and Don Bosco Technical Institute in Boroko and upgrading of programs and links with OLSH Teachers College, Kabaleo and St Mary's School of Nursing, Vunapope.
