New Students to be reminded about substance abuse

01/02/2011

The effects and implications of the abuse of alcohol, smoking and the use of illicit drugs will be impressed upon new students of Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang during their orientation next week from 7th February to 11th February 2011.

DWU has a “zero tolerance” policy on the abuse of alcohol and drugs and students will be duly reminded about what offenders face – instant termination from the University.

DWU considers that as a Christian National University it is duty bound to ensure its students are groomed properly and creating awareness on issues that affect youths is part of the holistic approach.

The students will also have sessions on other national issues such as gender relations and HIV/AIDS.

They will also have a session about how to make the transition into tertiary studies, information communication technology (ICT) services, listening and note-taking and the importance of conducting themselves in an ethical manner at all times.

Apart from the introductory activities for the new students, the main event for all students next week will be registration and resumption of academic classes. The week will end with a welcome Mass the University Chapel and welcome speeches led by DWU President Fr Jan Czuba next Friday.

Meanwhile, students began arriving at the Madang campus in the last few days and more are expected throughout the week.
