05/05/2011

Divine Word University (DWU) celebrated World Media Freedom Day on 29th April with a variety of activities ranging from speeches, drama, songs and panel discussion. As usual, the University marked the important day, on the Friday before the annual Open Day on Sunday 1st May, 2011.

The theme for this year was “PNG Media in Digital Age”. The highlight was the awarding of the DWU/UNESCO Communication and Development Award to journalist and news blogger, Malum Nalu.

Mr Nalu who is the Supplements Editor with The National newspaper was the winner of this year’s Award in recognition of his contribution towards communication and development.

The Head of Communication Arts Department, Br. Michael McManus, said: “Since the emphasis at today’s celebration is on digital media, we would like to especially acknowledge Malum Nalu’s contribution to digital media thorugh his blog site: Malum Nalu blogspot.”

“We believe that there is a greater need than ever for competent professional journalist to provide context and analysis of news for consumers online.”

McManus also cautioned citizen journalists to be ethical in what they publish online. He said lack of balance by many writers would not improve the overall quality of online news content.

Although Mr. Nalu was not present to receive the award, he has made a response digitally, on his blogspot.
The panel discussion also involved the Bismarck Ramu Group (BRG), a non government organisation based in Madang. BRG exploits social media especially internet, Facebook and You Tube in its entire advocacy and campaigns work.

Meanwhile, former Health Reporter with The National, Elizabeth Miae, challenged journalism students to use the digital media with responsibility.

“Digital media particularly the use of internet on computers, laptops and mobile phones is becoming increasingly common. It’s another step further in keeping the global community on par with what is happening.”

“We must always be reminded that the freedom of using and uploading information on the new media must come with responsibility. Remember your code of journalism ethics. Be diligent with the packaging and distribution of news items in this digital age.”
