Mr. Waka Tosa

Waka Tosa is a freelance social research consultant from Papua New Guinea. He worked in several organizations before joining Divine Word University as a lecturer in PNG Studies and International Department in 2017. After completing diploma studies in Divine Word University in 2002- his first job was with Trans Niugin Tours- an inbound tour operator based in Mt. Hagen Highlands of Papua New Guinea. He was Operations Manager- managing the general operations of the company with its wilderness lodges. In 2013, he joined the organization again to take the responsibility as a lodge manager of Karawari, Ambua and Rondon Ridges lodges for 6 months. In 2009- 13 after completing bachelor’s studies in Divine Word University he was working for Nancy Sullivan and Associates as social research officer. From 2009-13 he moved up the ranks to be the principal investigator and project director in research projects the organization undertook until he took post-graduate studies in Divine Word University in 2016. His major work is on Anthropology for development, environmental impact assessment, social impact assessment, social –economic analysis and reporting for operational context, social risk assessment and development of mitigation strategies, project evaluation & management, ethnographic research, social research and development. His research work led him to travel extensively in Papua New Guinea both rural and urban settings to conduct research studies. One of his achievement was to change the name of LNG developer- Exxon Mobile to PNG LNG Project after a country-wide survey was conducted. He led the team of national researchers to conduct the study to cover all the petroleum and gas licensing areas in PNG in 2013. His recent achievement was to generate a master’s thesis in contraceptive uptake (vasectomy) by males in Madang Province. The study was to explore the males understanding of vasectomy as substitute for tubal ligation- a female contraceptive remedy for birth control and pregnancy reduction.
