Cuban envoy visits DWU

Divine Word University (DWU) received a surprise visit by the Cuban Ambassador to Australia, Pedro Monzon on Tuesday 1st October, 2013.

His Excellency Monzon was on an official visit to Madang when he decided to pay a courtesy call on the university.

DWU President Fr Jan Czuba said the diplomat’s visit was purposely to revisit the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed several years back for a partnership program between Cuba and PNG to enhance the latter’s health system.

On Wednesday 2n October Ambassador Monzon addressed staff and students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and spoke about his visit.

“My presence here is to open collaboration with Papua New Guinea,” he said.

His Excellency Monzon said Cuba has a lot to offer in terms of providing and training medical professionals as it has one of the highest indexes of doctors in the world.

He assured students and staff that DWU was chosen as the exchange point in PNG because it promotes strong human values, something which is widely practiced in Cuban universities.

“This university (DWU) is a fundamental factor,” Monzon said, adding that there is a possibility of a twinning program between DWU and a Cuban university.

However he noted that there is a need for strong coordination between institutions such as those in education and health and non-government organizations to achieve the goal of an improved health service delivery system in PNG.

The Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Pascal Michon (PhD) thanked Ambassador Monzon for his visit which provided hope for the revival of the Cuban exchange program.
