Diwai rugby 7s girls win

A member of the Papua New Guinea Palais train-on squad side, Maureen Karo led the Divine Word University Diwai rugby union 7s side to beat the University of PNG girls in the grand final at the 3rd PNG University Students Games in Goroka on Friday 20th June, 2014.

Karo was on song scoring a try in Diwai’s trouncing of UPNG 35-0 at the National Sports Institute (NSI) on Friday 20th June. The University of Goroka was the host of the games from Wednesday 18th June to Friday 20th June, 2014. Due to limited sporting venues at the North Goroka campus, most sports were played at the NSI.

Karo, a final year business student rallied her troops to shut out their Waigani campus peers in both games against them. In the first game Diwai also left UPNG scoreless 24-0.

Karo was ably assisted by Delma Singip, Siba Mesa, Sophie John, Ancilla Ilave and Maria Apa. The strong performance of the girls from the Madang campus reaffirmed the message that rugby can be played competitively outside of the ‘traditional’ strongholds of Port Moresby and Lae.

The Diwai men’s Union 7s side lost to the University of Goroka Team 2 in the grand final 5-17 under circumstances which the Madang Campus students considered contrary to the purpose and spirit of the Games. The Diwai men’s rugby league 13s team who were not as successful also complained about being subjected to similar treatment.

The Diwai rugby touch open men and open mixed sides completed the competition at the top so did the men’s volleyball side while the females missed out.

In athletics, DWU’s 4x100 metre relay team of Joel Mura, Jalam Kapai, Quinton Talingapua and Peter Siliwen finished first and took out the top honours.

The DWU soccer and basketball teams in both male and female divisions also made it to various stages of the finals but missed the grand finals.
