Philip Gibbs has a Doctorate in Theology (STD) from the Gregorian University, Rome, a Postgraduate Diploma in Anthropology from Sydney University, and an MBA from Divine Word University. Since coming to Papua New Guinea in 1973 he has served as a parish priest (Porgera, Par) and pastoral centre director in the Enga Province, lecturer at Catholic Theological Institute, Bomana, Researcher at the Melanesian Institute, Goroka. Before coming to Divine Word University, he was Research advisor to Caritas Australia on the HIV and AIDS program, and Secretary for Social Concerns for the Catholic Bishops Conference of PNG/SI. He has been a guest lecturer at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila and at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He is an honorary staff member of the School of Culture, History and Language at Australian National University.

Social concerns in Melanesia, HIV and AIDS in PNG, masculinities, GBV, sorcery and witchcraft, contextual theologies in the Pacific region, indigenous spiritualities, electoral politics, interculturality, mission studies.
