Aim

The Diploma in Project Management (DipPM) program introduces and equips students with basic project management knowledge, skills, techniques and tools available to organizations in contemporary public or business environments. Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling resources to achieve specific goals.

The DipPM program is offered in flexible learning mode. Students take two units a semester and complete the program in two years. Students are required to participate in a two-week residential component each semester. Students usually have their own personal laptop.

Each of the 8 units has a fifteen credit point value and students are required to gain 120 credit points to be eligible to graduate with the award.

Purpose

A project may be defined as a temporary endeavour with a defined beginning and end (usually time-constrained, and often constrained by funding or deliverables), undertaken to meet unique goals and objectives, typically to bring about beneficial change or added value. Based on internationally recognized project management theories and best practices, the DipPM program is designed to train and develop competent project managers in both the public and private sectors of Papua New Guinea.

Diploma in Justice Administration

Program code : DJA

Aim

The aim of the program is to expose the students to the legislative and administrative processes involved in the provision of justice services and significantly provide a practical insight into the application of those laws and the administrative processes. This will enable the student to relate well to the law, institutions and individuals when involved in actual justice service delivery. For example, knowing how to draft a Pre-sentence Report and presenting it to the Courts.

Entry requirement

In selecting an applicant for the program, the Selection Committee will consider if the applicant-
a) has a Grade 12 level of education
b) is an officer of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General or any government or non-government organization that deals with restoring justice and preventing crime
c) if a government officer, he or she must:
         (i) have undergone the public service induction
         (ii) have served the government organization for a minimum of two (2) years
         (iii) have scored above satisfactory in a recent appraisal
         (iv) have not been the subject of any disciplinary action against him or her
         (v) have made an undertaking for continued service in a justice service portfolio
         (vi) continue to attend to work and undergo training under the supervision of a senior officer within that justice service organization.
d) score more than 50% in an entry test to be administered by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General, Human Resource Management Branch.

Diploma in Pastorial Ministry

Aim

Description

Entry requirement

Normally, students will be school leavers with a typical level of education of Year 12. School-leavers who have completed Year 10 may be admitted to the Diploma in Pastoral Ministry having submitted acceptable evidence of Recognised Prior Learning.

Duration of study

Normally students take at least two units a year and complete the program in a maximum of six years. In addition, those exiting the program after the satisfactory completion of one year FTE, i.e. three years part-time, will be granted the award of Certificate 4 in Pastoral Ministry by the DWU.

Classes are currently offered in flexible learning mode in Wewak, Mt Hagen and Goroka at premises owned or hired by the Sisters of Mercy. The units are normally held as intensives - usually over 7-10 days - during which time all study and assessment requirements are met. This approach reflects the University’s emphasis on developing meaningful learning within a supportive environment.

Requisites to complete the award

Each unit has a value of 10 credit points per Unit. Students are required to gain 120 credit points to qualify for the Diploma award.

The DipPastMin consists of sixteen units, of which twelve are required to complete the program. Units 1-12 are Required; they form the foundation of the program and cover a broad variety of theological subjects. We anticipate that, as the program becomes known, students will be enrolling in it at different semesters during the first two years. To cover this contingency, a Substitute unit may replace an equivalent Required unit. The following list outlines the twelve Required subjects and their theological areas of study. Note that all units are taken at level/year one.

Bachelor of Public Administration

Aim

The Bachelor of Public Administration (BPAdmin) program is ideal for executives in the public service as it can standardize knowledge base and enhance better approaches to service delivery to urban and rural populations in Papua New Guinea.

The purpose of this program is to provide a strategic framework designed to guide workforce training and development activities for the PNG Public Sector in support of Vision 2050 and the development of a strategic plan. From the pillars upon which the developmental vision is situated, this program addresses three of the government’s significant components. These components include empowerment of the people, effective and equitable delivery of services and making certain of a skilled and well-resourced public servant work force.

Entry requirement

Applicants should hold a diploma in public policy or management related fields and have a minimum of three years’ workplace experience.
