Aims
In March 2008, the University Council of Divine Word University approved the establishment of a Department of Mathematics and Computing Sciences within the Faculty of Business and Informatics to meet the needs of the nation in these rapidly developing and important fields. The Department was launched in 2009 and graduated its first class of students in 2013. The Department offers one four-program, a Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing Science. The strategic vision of the Department includes growth to the point at which a second program can be offered, a Bachelor of Mathematics Education. Graduates with good grades in the bachelor programs may go on to do a Master's degree and then on to a Ph.D. The aim of the Department is to provide to the Papua New Guinea workforce a steady stream of graduates who are not only capable of working in the expanding IT industry, but who additionally have a solid grounding in the theoretical frameworks which underlie that industry. Both in computing science and equally important in mathematics, an individual who has been introduced to the theoretical foundations is better educated, and better equipped for the ever-increasing pace of change in the technology world. Additionally, the Department intends to provide a steady stream of qualified graduates who are capable of entering the Papua New Guinea education sector, both at secondary and university levels. It is the intent of the Mathematics and Computing Science Department to grow, stabilise and mature to the point that a second program may be added Mathematics Education. Provision of quality, highly trained mathematics educators is a key next step in continuing to develop the national educational infrastructure of Papua New Guinea. As more and better educated students reach the latter years of secondary school and progress on into university, it is paramount that a proportionate amount of those students are adequately prepared for higher maths at the university level. The timing and future development of the Department depend on the size and quality of both trained staff and incoming students. However, the first six years of the existence of the Department give good reason for cautious optimism regarding future growth.
Entry requirement
It is anticipated that the University will accept an intake of approximately 30 students each year into the Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing Science program. As staffing, classroom and other facilities are available, the number of students in the incoming class may rise in order to develop a larger program. Applicants will usually be secondary school graduates who will be seeking to develop qualifications in mathematics and computing in order to meet the immediate needs to develop a pervasive technology infrastructure for Papua New Guinea, and their own needs to gain employment in this area.
Normal Entry: Applicants will normally be required to have completed the equivalent of four years secondary education or equivalent from a recognised educational institution. Minimum grades of ‘B’ in English, ‘B’ in Mathematics A, and ‘B’ in Physics are required at Grade 12 PNG secondary school level. Additionally, an applicant must have at least a ‘C’ in all other subjects taken in secondary school.
Special Entry: Applicants whose educational qualifications do not satisfy the requirements for admission to the program, but who have a sound and sufficient basis for application supported by documentation, may be granted admission if they satisfy special admission criteria, determined by the Academic Board of Divine Word University. Credit may be given under certain circumstances. Provision exists within the University for recognition of prior learning. Students applying for transfer of credit or recognition of prior learning must follow the appropriate processes and procedures of the university. The maximum credit that may be allowed in any program is half of the program units.
