Welcome to Department of Finance and Management

Department of Finance and Management

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is experiencing rapid social and economic growth and change across all development sectors to realize the PNG Government’s Vision 2050. As a national development priority, building a skilled workforce is imperative to drive the nation’s strategic development priorities to meet set targets. As a result, organizations must have the ‘right’ current workforce managed in such a manner to withstand and see prosperity amidst the ever changing environments. Under the auspices of Divine Word University, the Department of Finance and Management (DFM) became incepted, as one of its significant players in program offering to respond to this need. DFM is a new addition to the existing departments in the Faculty of Business and Informatics (FBI) under the leadership of the Dean of FBI. Despite being a new comer in 2013, DFM already has postgraduate and undergraduate programs with an enrolment of more than 200 students and a record history of having graduated more than 1000 students already.

DFM continues to address current employee professional and workplace needs in its program offerings. All programs are designed in flexible learning mode and assessments are workplace-based. Students are required to attend a two week face to face intensive residential and a workplace application component must happen once a semester for two years. Programs incorporate high standard personal and professional graduate attributes as set by Divine Word University.

In line with the third decade Divine Word University Strategic Plan, the Department of Finance and Management intends to offer online programs at the postgraduate and the undergraduate levels. This move will enable accessibility to a larger PNG workforce population and citizens. The teaching team is highly qualified and experienced in industry and academia. Adult learning approaches are applied to learning experiences. Teaching strategies and approaches and learning is enhanced with the availability of modern learning and teaching facilities in the campuses where programs are offered.

Welcome to Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management

Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management

Tourism is one of the promising industries in Papua New Guinea but lacks high quality and competent professionals to respond to its operational challenges. Seeing this significant need, Divine Word University, since 1998 through its Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM), continues to offer programs to address ever changing issues and concerns in the field of tourism and hospitality. Ever mindful of the important part and contribution that tourism plays in the economic growth and development of any nation such as Papua New Guinea, it intends to become a leading educational institution in the region by resolving to provide strategic approaches and sustainable solutions to the many tourism issues defined within the context of the PNG setting.

THM department programs are designed to provide its graduates with ethically sound values and moral understanding that will initiate, develop, and build a local tourism infrastructure that is environment sensitive and socially responsible and further, to create viable tourism ventures and employment opportunities for its indigenous people.

Students are trained and developed to acquire a holistic and realistic knowledge about the different sectors of the tourism and hospitality industry. They are also provided with appropriate communication and management skills necessary to make them better and active participants in their chosen profession.

Welcome to Department of Mathemattics and Computing Science

Department of Mathematics and Computing Science

On behalf of the Mathematics and Computing Science Department at Divine Word University in Madang campus, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to this 2023 academic year. We are proud that in more than a decade exceptional students from all across Papua New Guinea have chosen our department to undertake their graduate studies. We are delighted to testify that after the completion of their degree, more of our graduates evolve into building successful careers and are employed in high demanding technological working environments, academia, and beyond.

The MCS program is designed to give our students a broader perspective beyond their interested disciplines and their accustomed method of learning. Students are challenged to think abstractly and critically analyze challenging problems that eventually lead to logical solutions. We are committed in our profession to ensure that our students achieve theoretical and practical skills in mathematics and computing science not only by face-to-face meetings in class, but also through a series of research, field study, student activities, seminars, and community service engagements.

This year, the department is embarking on introducing new areas of discipline in the program that will capture cybersecurity and cloud computing. We believe that gaining knowledge in such discipline apart from computer networking, computer programming, database designs, mobile programming, data analysis, mathematical modeling, and mathematical analysis will equip our graduates with high digital and analytical skills who will provide solutions to ICT and related problems within Papua New Guinea and abroad. Another major project is to establish a testing center here at DWU campus so we could conduct industrial examinations for our students, staff and external students to acquire industrial certifications.

The DWU theme for this year is "The end of knowledge should be service to others." by Cesar Chavez. Generally, the theme means the end result of all knowledge gained should be put to good use for the benefit of humanity. The Divine Word of God reaffirms this quote in 1 Peter 4:10 “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms”. We are all uniquely fashioned by our Creator therefore l invite you all to serve each other with your professional knowledge and skills. With that, I wish you all God's favor and abundant blessings for this 2023 academic year.

Mr Cyril Sarsoruo
Head of Mathematics and Computing Science Department.

Welcome to the Information Systems Department at Divine Word University!

We look forward to welcoming both new and returning students this year, 2023, at the ISMCS welcome function. We are proud to be celebrating our 20th anniversary on campus this year and continue to provide a platform for students to learn, grow, and use their knowledge to make a positive impact in the country.

This year, the university has chosen the theme of “The End of All Knowledge Should Be Service to Others” to emphasize the importance of helping others through our knowledge and skills. As you navigate your studies in the Information Systems Department, we encourage you to think about how things you are learning can be used to benefit the world around you.

This year, we have many exciting events and programs planned, including the Girls in ICT Day, International Day of Mathematics, DWU Virtual Career Expo/Open Day, and the 18th Information Systems Symposium.

We hope you have a productive and enjoyable time in the Information Systems Department. May your studies be filled with knowledge and service to others!
