Department of Business Studies

The Department of Business Studies (BS) is guided by the vision statement of DWU and the university’s mission of (1) acquisition of knowledge, which is the mission of research; (2) the transmission of knowledge, which is the mission of teaching; and (3) the application of the knowledge, which is the mission of community engagement. As an integral department of the Faculty of Business and Informatics (FBI), its programs and activities are in congruence with the faculty’s main goals.

Based on the above premises, the department’s mission statement is:

In partnership with its internal and external stakeholders, the BS department commits to assist its clientele to achieve scholarly values, lifelong learning; become contributors of development along business and entrepreneurship, management and accountancy professionalism in local, national and international contexts; transform their orientation to be job creators and providers; and to adopt their sustainable existence in a global society.

The ongoing activities of the Department of Business Studies, through the various programs it offers and in collaboration with the Faculty of Business and Informatics, is in the delivery of the Master in Business Administration (MBA) and Master in Professional Accountancy (MPA) at POM campus, and the Master of Leadership in Business Administration (MLBA) at Madang Campus. The department also engages in progressive efforts towards the development of future undergraduate and postgraduate programs for delivery through flexible mode or online. It also assists with building the research culture of the University in business, management and accountancy with emphasis on scholarly values in relation to research-led teaching, and prepares its graduates for their place in a global society.

The quality standards embraced by the BS department are those described in the academic and administrative manuals and the Strategic Plans of DWU in general and Faculty of Business and Informatics in particular. They are the prime sources in pursuing further development of Business Studies graduates attributes through teaching, learning, research and community engagement strategies and activities. Student participation is encouraged. Students are encouraged to be active members of the university community, to take part in extracurricular activities (Open Day, Cultural Day, Business Ethics Symposium, CPAPNG’s continuing professional education, conferences, seminars and research activities) as well as their formal studies.

The Department of Business Studies’ implementation of teaching and learning strategies through research and inquiry, communication, information literacy, ethical, social and professional understandings, and personal and intellectual autonomy; specifically contribute to the achievement of students’ vibrant intellectual membership in a global society. In dealing with the quality standards for students, the BS department anchors them in the following attributes:

Ethically informed and able to demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual and for human diversity, recognize their responsibility to the common good, the environment and society, and apply ethical perspectives in informed decision making.

Knowledgeable and able to think critically and reflectively, demonstrate values, knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to the discipline and/or profession, solve problems in a variety of settings taking local and international perspectives into account.

Skillful and able to work both autonomously and collaboratively, locate, organize, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information, demonstrate effective communication in oral and written English language and visual media, utilize information and communication and other relevant technologies effectively.
