PM Marape Commends DWU’s Contribution to PNG

Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Hon. James Marape, delivered the Prime Minister's Address at the Divine Word University 30th Anniversary Festival of Legacy and Vision, paying tribute to the University's outstanding contribution to Papua New Guinea over the past three decades. He thanked Madang Governor Hon. Ramsey Pariwa for his leadership and acknowledged the Catholic Church for its enduring commitment to education, noting that DWU has touched the heart and soul of the nation by producing disciplined, high-quality graduates who continue to serve PNG with distinction.

Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting church-run institutions, emphasizing that while universities like DWU retain their autonomy, they must remain accountable and continue delivering quality education aligned with the values and aspirations of Papua New Guinea's Constitution. He assured the University that Government support through funding and development programs would continue, enabling DWU to reach its full potential in providing world-class education for future generations.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea also encouraged the University to strive for internationally recognized standards, preparing graduates who can compete and excel not only in Papua New Guinea but also in Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. Acknowledging the leadership of DWU first President Professor Fr Jan Czuba, SVD, Prime Minister Marape commended his unwavering passion for education and his lifelong commitment to developing the people of Papua New Guinea through learning. He noted that Fr Jan's love for education has been reflected in his dedication to the growth and success of Divine Word University and thanked him for his leadership and service since the institution attained university status in 1996.

The Prime Minister further encouraged students to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, becoming job creators rather than simply job seekers, and challenged the University to continue nurturing graduates who can drive economic growth and innovation in the country.

Alumnus Highlights DWU’s Legacy of Service

Sharing his keynote address at the DWU 30th Anniversary Festival of Legacy and Vision, Mr. Jonathan Corotan, DWU Alumni and Chief Executive Officer of PNG Minning & Petroleum Hospitality Services, congratulated Divine Word University on reaching this significant milestone.

Reflecting on the university's impact over three decades, Mr. Corotan said that 30 years cannot simply be measured by calendars, but by the more than 27,000 graduates who have gone on to serve and contribute to their communities across Papua New Guinea and beyond.

He recalled a time when education followed a different rhythm, marked by chalkboards, face-to-face lectures, long hours in the library, and research that required patience and discipline. Answers did not come from a quick online search, but through perseverance, critical thinking, and meaningful human interaction.

Today, he noted, education has transformed dramatically. Classrooms have expanded beyond physical walls, while digital libraries and technology

provide access to vast amounts of information and opportunities that previous generations could scarcely have imagined. However, he emphasized that technological advancement also brings challenges.

"Technology can make things faster, but only our values will determine whether we move in the right direction."

Mr. Corotan said this is what makes DWU's approach to education unique. Beyond academic achievement, the university has consistently sought to develop graduates grounded in integrity, compassion, and service. DWU alumni now serve in education, healthcare, churches, government, business, and community organizations, making a difference wherever they are called to serve.

He reminded attendees that the true success of an alumnus is not measured by awards or titles, but by the number of lives touched and transformed.

"A degree may open doors for a person, but a life of service can change the lives of many."
