Doctoral programs
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The Doctor of Education (EdD) is a program of research and advanced study which enables the candidate to make a significant contribution to knowledge and practice in their professional context. The candidate may also contribute more generally to scholarship within a discipline or field of study.
The EdD is different from, but complementary to, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). It is recommended for those who wish to study and research in areas associated with their professional life in education. Graduates are equipped to assume advanced professional and leadership roles, including senior educational researchers, policy advisers, school leaders and curriculum and policy development specialists.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is completed by a research thesis of about 80,000 words on an approved topic under the guidance of a supervisory team. The candidate demonstrates the capacity to carry out independent research.
The PhD program is offered in both full-time and part-time study modes. Students maintain regular communication with their supervisory team, and the program culminates with external examination of the thesis for the candidate to be eligible for the award.
The normal period of candidature is four years full-time or six years part-time. The PhD award by thesis alone is recommended for those in, or aiming to enter, an academic position or a professional research post.
Master’s Research Programs
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program is completed by a research thesis of about 40,000 words on an approved topic under the guidance of a supervisory team. The candidate demonstrates the capacity to carry out independent research.
The MPhil program is offered as a stand-alone degree and a stepping stone to the PhD, providing an internationally recognized award of a higher level of supervised scholarship at master's level.
The normal period of candidature is two years full-time or four years part-time. The program culminates with external examination of the thesis, which must be passed for the candidate to be eligible for the award.
Master in Research Methodology (MRM)
The Master in Research Methodology (MRM) program specializes in research paradigms, methodologies and methods that are relevant across all disciplines. The student's choice of a research problem to investigate influences the Faculty under which they are enrolled.
The MRM program is offered in blended learning mode. Students take two units a semester and complete the program in two and a half or three years, including a one-week residential component per unit and an optional Week O orientation for new intakes.
The program aims to produce graduates capable of undertaking research using appropriate methods. The skills gained are ideal for students wishing to pursue doctoral studies at a later date.
