Divine Word University, Madang Campus, recently hosted the first day of its Conflict Resolution Workshop, a leadership development initiative designed to equip students with practical skills for managing conflict constructively and effectively. The workshop was facilitated by Bishop Douglas Young, SVD, with support from the Office of the President, the Madang Campus Administration, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Student Services, the Student Representative Council, and student leaders across the University.

Held under the theme, "The Power of Conflict Resolution," the workshop brought together current Student Representative Council members and selected students from Years 1, 2, and 3 who have demonstrated leadership potential, a willingness to serve, and the ability to positively influence their peers. The program aims to nurture emerging student leaders and prepare them for future leadership roles within the University and beyond.

The first day challenged participants to rethink common misconceptions about conflict while introducing practical conflict resolution frameworks, tools, and leadership models. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and hands-on activities, students explored the importance of active listening, empathy, effective communication, teamwork, and collaborative problem-solving in addressing disagreements and building positive relationships.

Participants demonstrated strong engagement throughout the sessions, gaining valuable insights into understanding different perspectives and responding to conflict in constructive ways. By the end of the day, students had developed greater confidence in adopting solution-focused approaches to conflict management while strengthening their leadership capabilities.

The workshop also reinforced the values of cooperation, mutual respect, and community harmony, all of which are essential qualities for student leaders entrusted with representing and supporting their peers across the University.

The second session of the workshop will be held on 8 August 2026, where participants will continue to explore practical conflict resolution strategies and leadership-focused activities designed to strengthen their ability to address challenges constructively and foster positive outcomes within their communities.
